How does all this new technology integrate into the brutal weather of the north? The integration of new technology in vehicles is accelerating at an astronomical rate. Sometimes it feels difficult to keep up, Every time you blink there's something new. Even for a sales guy, who's life revolves around it, has trouble answering all the questions customers may have. I frequently get asked similar questions though, which are very valid concerns considering our temperatures can at times, be considered Polar. First and foremost is about our ESS systems or "Electronic Start Stop" This feature is showing up in the majority of new vehicles and is likely going to be standard in all upcoming vehicles. For now you have the option to trigger it "off". What is ESS? ESS is the system within your vehicle that shuts off the engine when you are stopped for a prolonged time. I.E. A red light, or a train. Once you apply a little gas, then engine kicks back in. Why? ESS is designed to reduce Fuel consumption and emissions. Concerns? The most common concern I have is that the ESS will shut off the engine in freezing conditions and may not be able to start again. Is this going to happen? No, the ESS system gauges the temperature of the vehicle and will only activate when the vehicle is at a fully operational temperature.
